Former Korea Institute of Materials Science Employee Under Investigation for Corporate Card Misuse

[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Changwon – Police have launched an investigation into a former employee of the Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS), a government-funded research institute, over allegations of embezzlement involving corporate credit cards.



According to the Changwon Jungbu Police Station on September 9, a man in his 30s, identified only as Mr. A, is being investigated on charges of breach of trust.



Allegations

Period: October–December 2023

Alleged acts: Nine instances of unauthorized use of a KIMS corporate card

Amount: Approximately KRW 28.39 million (USD 21,000)

Modus operandi: Payments were allegedly made to a business operated by his family under the pretense of purchasing supplies



Current Status

Mr. A was dismissed from KIMS following the incident

The misappropriated funds were reportedly reimbursed in full to the institute

Police received a complaint from KIMS in April 2024 and have since completed preliminary questioning of the complainant



Next Steps

Authorities confirmed that Mr. A will be summoned for questioning in the near future as part of the ongoing investigation.
